The House On Mango Street

Literary Devices and Language

Compiled by Laura Brientnall

What is a literary device?  A literary device is a mechanical contrivance that relates to language.  Literary devices can be used in many ways.   They can be used in a unique way to express your thoughts.  They can also be used to help explain the writing better and are also a more interesting way of learning.   Some authors relay on literary devices as a major part of their writing and depend very strongly on these to give their writing a boost for the reader.  Literary devices allow the reader to imagine and also wander upon what is being explained.

In The House on Mango Street, Sandra Cisneros uses many types of literary devices to help explain her vignettes.   Since the book is set up in all different vignettes, many things are discussed and compared in just one.   Literary devices come in use for these vignettes because of the different comparisons and the many explanations.  Cisneros is very good with her literary devices.  The way she uses them makes the book come alive in your imagination and allows a clearer view of what is happening in the vignettes.
